Description

Crimes are generally categorized as felonies or misdemeanors based on their nature and the maximum punishment that can be imposed. A felony involves serious misconduct that is punishable by death or by imprisonment of over one year based on the crime. The code for evaluating the crime and punishment is under the Indian Penal Code and the procedure of trial is followed under Criminal Procedure Code. The felonies can be classified varying degrees of punishment and their examples include murder, manslaughter, rape, fraud, robbery, racketeering, arson, white collar crimes etc. Misdemeanor crimes are misconduct punishable by up to one year in prison and/or a fine and their examples include  traffic violations, petty theft, simple assault and battery, trespass etc.
